Parent Communication (Intermediate)  September 1, 2021

Hello parents/guardians and students,

We hope that you are enjoying the last few days of summer.  The staff at LDH are excited to welcome the students back to the 2021-2022 school year.  The Ottawa Carleton District School Board and Longfields-Davidson Heights are taking a cautious approach for the beginning of the school year.  Our priorities are to maximize student and staff safety, minimize the risks for the spread of COVID at school and to slowly move toward the resumption of all school based activities.  There are still lots of questions concerning specifics about school operations that we are continuing to work through.  We will keep you updated as things progress, but here are the basics concerning the school start up.

Health and Safety Protocols

Latest information from Ottawa Public Health - Aug. 27 letter from Ottawa Public Health

Ottawa Public Health and OCDSB Safety measures will remain in place: In-person elementary school days will be very similar to last year:

  • All students and staff must do a daily screening for COVID symptoms before coming to school - https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/

  • Students will be required to enter and exit the school through a designated door to minimize contact between students.  Students will be allowed to enter the building as of 8:55 a.m.  Students are asked to line up outside of their designated pylon starting at 8:40 a.m.

  • Students and Staff will be required to hand sanitize upon entering and exiting the building

  • Students and Staff will be required to wear masks indoors at all times (the exception would be when students are eating lunch or for students with medical exemptions).

  • Visitors will not be allowed into the building.  There will be exceptions where there are extenuating circumstances.

  • Cohorts: Students remain with their cohort the entire day.

  • Nutrition Breaks and Recess: Nutrition breaks will be held in the classroom, but recess will be outdoors. When a class goes outside for recess, the students in the class will stay with their cohort. All students will remain on school property for both nutrition breaks.

  • We will not have instrumental music classes at this time.

  • Personal Items-Students are not to bring any items such as toys/games/sports equipment from home.

  • All teachers will maintain a Google Classroom for the homeroom (1 per homeroom) so that they can move between models if needed for any covid absence/circumstance.

  • COVID Wise: Continued emphasis in schools on cohorting, social distancing, hand hygiene, directional signage in schools, enhanced cleaning practices.

  • Furniture and resources will be kept to a minimum in class to maximize the space between the desks and facilitate the cleaning process. All these items will be stored in the school for later use.

School Schedule

The LDH intermediate panel  runs on a Monday to Friday schedule. There are days in the year when our Monday to Friday Schedule is adjusted to accommodate holidays and Professional Development days.  Your child’s homeroom teacher will confirm them. Please see our daily schedule below.

Arrival - 8:40

*It is recommended that students arrive as close to 8:55 as possible to avoid waiting in class line-ups.

Grade 7 & 8 Schedule (Within each block are subject periods of 40 or 60 minutes)

8:55-10:55 a.m.   – Instructional  Block One

10:55-11:35 a.m.    – Recess/Nutrition

11:35-1:35 p.m.   – Instructional  Block Two

1:35-2:15 p.m. – Recess/Nutrition

2:15-3:15 p.m. – Instructional Block Three

School Start Up

Students will receive an email from their home room teacher on Tuesday, Sept. 7.  The email will contain information on the student’s designated entry and exit door and a general welcome from their teacher. On the first day or school there will be many staff members on-site to help students find their designated pylon to line-up. We ask that parents not remain on-site as it leads to congestion in our yard as we look to organize students. Once students are settled in class, they will receive their timetable. Students should bring a full water bottle, a mask, and a  lunch and  one or two binders with paper, pens and pencils etc.  Teachers will provide a more extensive list of necessary learning materials during their class.

Grade Seven  Orientation

This coming September, as we welcome our grade 7 students, we are preparing a number of orientation activities.  These activities will help your child become more familiar with Longfields as a building, as well as a community.  Please refer to the following video from the LDH website as an introduction to what to expect at LDH.

Grade Seven Welcome to LDH

Switching back and forth between OCV and In Person Schooling

Families had the opportunity in March and June of 2021 to request a placement in either in person or online learning (OCV). There will be very little opportunity for families to change their placements. We recognize that for some families things have changed in their personal lives that might require such a change. LDH students and families are asked to email a member of administration (i.e. [email protected]) if they are seeking a change in placement.

At this time, only situations with extenuating circumstances that are related to a ground protected under the Human Rights Code are being considered. When there are extenuating circumstances, and they relate, in whole or in part, to a ground protected from discrimination[1] under Ontario Human Rights Code, the OCDSB will work to find appropriate accommodation for the need, to the point of undue hardship. A member of the Multidisciplinary team (Social worker, Psychologist, Child-Youth worker) may be assigned to conduct an additional review of the request and advise the Principal/Superintendent.

[1] Grounds protected from discrimination under the Ontario Human Rights Code are: citizenship; race; place of origin; ethnic origin; colour; ancestry; disability (including mental, physical, developmental or learning disabilities); age (18 years of age or older); creed (religion); sex (including pregnancy and breastfeeding); family status (such as being in a parent-child relationship); marital status (including married, single, widowed, divorced, separated or living in a conjugal relationship outside of marriage, whether in a same-sex or different-sex relationship); sexual orientation; gender identity; and gender expression.

Student Lockers

Lockers will be assigned to students once the school year is up and running.  Students will be assigned lockers near their homeroom classes where possible.

Student Fees

Student fees will not be collected for the 2021-2022 school year.

LDH has only one yellow school bus transporting students to school.  This bus transports students from the Winding Way subdivision by Prince of Wales.  OSTA (Ottawa Student Transportation Authority) automatically provides Presto passes (passes to use OC Transpo buses) to students who meet the criteria for living a specific distance from the school.  OC Transpo provides a number of special buses specifically for LDH students to get to and from school.    The Presto passes usually arrive by the end of the first week of school.  Parents should make arrangements to transport their child for the first week of school.  The parent portal at OSTA is now open and can be accessed by clicking on the following link:

Special Education/ESL Supports

The Learning Support and ESL Team at LDH is eager to support all students.  Our staff have been working with staff at our feeder schools to create transition plans to support students with different learning profiles.  If you have any questions related to your child’s IEP or learning needs, our support team is here to help.

Extra Curriculars

We realize that extra curricular opportunities help enhance student life at LDH.  We hope that we will be able to get back to offering a variety of extra curricular opportunities in the areas of music, sports, arts, and technology.  We hope to be able to provide more information by the end of September.

Allergies & Medical Conditions

Medical Forms:  This process is now electronic-click here!

Please complete the new OCDSB 963 - PLAN OF CARE FOR STUDENTS if your child has any medical conditions(including administration of medication, e.g. Ibuprofen).

This one new document covers all previous medical forms required for students at our school.

This electronic form does not require a doctor's signature. Please remember to "SAVE" at the end of the form once completed.  Once the form is saved, a copy of the form will be sent to the school for our records, no paper copy is required.

If we have any questions or concerns in regards to your submission we will contact you directly.

Returning Borrowed Tech Equipment

Due to the COVID restrictions from last year, LDH lent out a significant amount of chromebooks to students to support their online learning.  We are still looking to collect any outstanding chromebooks so that they can be cleaned and serviced.  We want to ensure that all of our students will have access to the necessary equipment to support their learning.

We will continue to update our school website  for information as it becomes available.

We look forward to welcoming students back on Thursday, September 9.  Have a great Labour Day weekend.
